The Narcissistic Dilemma:
A Perspective from Relational and Integrative Psychotherapy
Richard G. Erskine, PhD.
The psychotherapy of Narcissistic dynamics often revolves around the the client’s relational dilemma whether “to need or not to need”. This dilemma results in the behavioral characteristics of extreme self-involvement, grandiosity, an absence of empathy and a lack of interest in others, even while others are being used to obtain approval and admiration. We will also discuss the “closet narcissist” who is covertly self-centered while acting shy, timid, and ineffective. In this workshop we will distinguish between a narcissistic Style, Pattern, and a Personality Disorder. Dr. Erskine will lecture on the etiology, intrapsychic conflicts, and the relational methods necessary in an effective psychotherapy of clients with issues of Narcissistic processing. This workshop will include time for some supervision of participants’ cases and some demonstration of the methods of Relational and Integrative Psychotherapy.
