Inquiry, Attunement and Involvement:
the Applications of Integrative Psychotherapy
Richard G. Erskine, Ph. D.
Sponsored by BIOS Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy Training, Bilbao, Spain
In this 5-day experiential workshops Richard Erskine will demonstrate and discuss the methods of a developmentally-based, relationally-focused of Integrative Psychotherapy. This unique approach to psychotherapy includes a gentle, respectful inquiry into the client’s phenomenological experiences, vulnerability, and unaware transferential relationships provide both client and therapist with an ever-increasing awareness of who the client is. Attunement includes the therapist’s sensing the client’s affect, natural rhythms, developmental level of functioning, and relationship needs, and in reciprocity, expressing the corresponding affect and resonating behavior. Involvement is reflected in the client’s experience that the therapist is fully committed to his/her welfare. It includes sensitivity to and acknowledgement of intrapsychic functions, feelings and phenomenological experience; validation and normalization of the client’s sense of integrity and style of coping; and the presence of the therapist through his/her responsibility, dependability, and reliability.
Dr.Erskine will make use of both a Child Developmental and Relational Perspectives in his teaching about how to:
• work with the client’s unconscious processes;
• identify and use implicit and procedural memories;
• identify various forms of age regression;
• ethically facilitate therapeutic age regression;
• formulate developmental images;
• use therapeutic inference;
• use various methods that facilitate the healing of relational disruptions;
• protectively differentiate between re-experiencing and reliving;
• titrate the level of therapeutic support according to the client’s capacity;
This workshop is for experienced psychotherapists who want to refine their professional understanding and therapy skills in facilitating in-depth psychotherapy. Richard Erskine will do live therapy with some members of the group followed by active group discussions about the theory and methods used in the live therapy. Participants may bring cases from their own psychotherapy practice for supervision.
