The Narcissistic Dilemma:
A Perspective from Relational and Integrative Psychotherapy

Richard G. Erskine & Amaia Mauriz-Etxabe
Sponsored by BIOS Institute for Integrative Psychotherapy Training, Bilbao, Spain

A 5-day Residential Workshop: Wednesday, October 19 to Sunday, October 23, 2022
Bilbao, Spain

The psychotherapy of Narcissistic dynamics often revolves around the client’s relational dilemma whether “to need or not to need”. This dilemma results in the behavioral characteristics of extreme self-involvement, grandiosity, an absence of empathy, and a lack of interest in others, even while others are being used to obtain approval and admiration. We will also discuss the “closet narcissist” who is covertly self-centered while acting shy, timid, and ineffective. In this workshop we will distinguish between a narcissistic Style, Pattern, and a Personality Disorder. Dr. Erskine will lecture on the etiology, intrapsychic conflicts, and the relational methods necessary in an effective psychotherapy of clients with issues of Narcissistic processing

This experiential workshop is for mental health professionals who want to apply theory in clinical practice and to enhance their effectiveness through identifying aspects of their own contact interruption, life script, and countertransference. Richard and/or Amaia will do live therapy with some of the members of the group. They will then discuss the theory and methods used in the live therapy.
