This case discussion and supervision group is intended for psychotherapists and counsellors who want to further their understanding and refine their therapeutic skills in providing a Developmentally-based, Relationally-focused Integrative Psychotherapy for their clients. We will focus on the client’s unconscious relational patterns and how transference is an expression of what the client needs in the therapeutic relationship. We will also explore the psychotherapist’s reactive and responsive countertransference and how to make effective use of the therapists internal sensations and fantasies.
In these 6 sessions (3-hours each session) there will be assigned readings and group discussions that may address the following topics:
• the centrality of an attuned therapeutic relationship;
• therapeutic attunement, involvement and presence;
• the importance of a sustained phenomenological inquiry;
• responding to relational-needs;
• working with the Script System;
• when and how to use behavioural or cognitive interventions and/or supportive age regression;
• countertransference and the therapeutic use of Self.
Participants are expected to present cases from their own therapeutic practice. These may include either formal presentations or spontaneous therapy vignettes that have been stimulated by the readings and discussions. Participation in these case discussions requires that each person makes an ethical commitment to client confidentiality.
To facilitate discussion specific readings will be assigned for each meeting. Participants are expected to come to class prepared to discuss how the concepts presented in the assigned chapters may apply to their therapy practice. The text book is Beyond Empathy: A Therapy of Contact-in-Relationship. If you have previously read the book, please read the assignment so that the ideas are fresh in your mind.
